4 of 6 One of the two stair towers. The oak wall frame is infilled with lath and plaster. The roof is thatched with Norfolk reed. The original Globe was destroyed in 1613 when a spark from a canon fired in a performance of Henry VIII set fire to the thatched roof. Fire safety has required changes from the original details. Reed thatch and timber boards were treated with fire retardants. Extra fire escape stairs were worked into the design. |
